Septic systems are underground structures consisting of a septic tank and a drain field that treat waste water from household plumbing.

These systems are common in rural areas and have been around for many years.

How it works

Waste water from the home travels through a pipe into the septic tank. Inside the septic tank, solids in the waste water settle to the bottom forming “sludge” while oil and grease float to the top forming “scum”.

Different compartments inside the septic tank and a T-shaped outlet prevent the sludge and scum from exiting the tank while the liquid waste water exits into the drain field.

In the drain field, the liquid waste water filters through the soil which removes harmful bacteria and viruses while absorbing nutrients.

Septic System Maintenance

Septic systems require regular maintenance to ensure the system continues to work properly. A septic system that is in poor condition can be health hazard and cause significant property damage.

Pumping the Tank

Septic systems will accumulate solids overtime and need to be pumped periodically. The exact frequency a septic system needs to be pumped depends on the number of occupants and the size of the septic tank. On average, household septic tanks should be pumped every 3 to 5 years.

Bacteria Additives

All septic systems require bacteria to work properly. Bacteria helps break down solids and reduce odors. Unfortunately, household cleaners can sometimes kill the naturally occurring bacteria inside of a septic tank.

Using bacteria additives can help restore bacteria to a septic tank. These additives are inexpensive and will help ensure the septic system continues to work properly.

High Pressure Water Jetting

Even with regular pumping, blockages can sometimes form in the drain pipes which prevent wastewater from exiting the septic tank. For this reason, high pressure water jetting is recommended every 3-5 years to eliminate any blockages or debris.
