What is a Wind Mitigation Inspection?
Save money and learn how to protect your home from hurricanes with a Wind Mitigation Inspection. Wind Mitigation Inspections look for construction features that have been proven to reduce losses during a hurricane. These construction features include things like roof deck attachments and opening protections such as shutters. If your home has wind resistant features, you could qualify for state mandated discounts on the wind storm portion of your insurance policy.
Who can Benefit from a Wind Mitigation Inspection?
Just about every homeowner can benefit from a Wind Mitigation Inspection. Discounts are calculated by the insurance company and are based on a couple different factors. In general, older homes (over 20 years of age) with updated roofs and windows/doors receive the biggest discounts. Calculate your estimated savings using the Florida Wind Insurance Savings Calculator.
The Wind Mitigation Inspection Process
1. Meet with the inspector
You will first meet with the inspector and discuss any known updates to the house. This includes things like a new roof or updated windows/doors. Please provide written documentation if possible.
2. Inspection is performed
The home inspector will then inspect the roof, openings (skylights, windows, doors, garage doors, etc.), roof deck attachments, and roof to wall attachments. During the inspection, the inspector will need access to the exterior, interior, and attic.
3. Inspection reports
Wind Mitigation Inspection reports are emailed within 24 hours of the inspection. Reports are emailed to the client in a PDF format who then forwards the report to the insurance company.
